Dystopia and Utopia

Dystopia is a society in which most people live unhappy, they often feature strict government control a totalitarian government, they enforce one religion for all people, they outlaw religion altogether, and the rest of the population are fighting each other. Dystopian stories explore themes like anarchism, oppression and mass poverty. Dystopian stories always challenges the audience to think differently about current social and political moments, because we don't live that distance from an dystopian society, and with COVID-19, dystopias featuring disease have taken on a new life, they have similarities with movie 12 Monkeys a 1995 American science fiction film, and it's in a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet. So, we aren't distant from a post-apocalyptic moment in real life. But let's not forget that dystopia is a not a real place, but things and governments can be "dystopian". The alarming fear of climate changes that can affect our way of living to worst.

Dystopian writers use the theme of dystopia to Critique, Educate and Opine. They use these themes to satirise and critique real life occurrences, like the for instance, Anthony Burgess' 1962 book A Clockwork Orange is a societal satire of behaviourism. It takes place in a futuristic society with a very aggressive adolescent subculture, also a means to inform and forewarn of the hazards of the current social and political structures is through dystopian literature. In the dystopian future nation of Gilead, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, published in 1985, takes place. It warns against patriarchy that is oppressive. These types of these dystopian stories are under the government control theme, and there is some sort of resistance against this regime that is always being portrayed by government that rule with an "iron fist" with either a communist or fascist dictatorship. Movies like Metropolis, Battle Royale and Brazil explores these themes.

Dystopian media can help society to understand why we're right to be afraid of certain things in modern society, the good dystopian movies or novels can already exist right now on our society but is intensified and exaggerated to convey a message or criticize. This can help us think about scenarios that will go through.

The Counter part of Dystopia is Utopia. Utopia is a fictional community or civilazation that offers its citizens very desirable or almost ideal qualities, Sir Thomas More was the first person to write of the word from the Greek word “ou-topos”, literally translates to "no place" and “good place” or “nowhere”. Used to describe a perfect imaginary world, More’s book imagines a complex and self-contained community set on an island they always depict a perfect utopian society, and since then, philosophers, government officials, and fiction writers have all used his ideas as a guide.

Utopian studies are still taught in philosophy departments at leading universities. Utopian attempts have been made in the past by both groups and individuals, but none have succeeded to date. A utopian author places their story in a setting that is consistent with their personal philosophy and larger ethos.

This does not imply that conflicts do not exist in utopian literature. Often, utopian literature identifies aspects of today's reality that could use better and then imagines worlds with all of those qualities like having ecological utopias depict societies in which the severe issues. that affect the climate and natural resources do not exist, and the breakthroughs in computing, robotics, and transportation shown in technological utopias are merely pipe fantasies in the real world.

There are many noticeable utopian writers are Thomas More, Ursula K. Le Guin, H. G. Wells and Edward Bellamy.

Case Study

UK film industry

The United Kingdom has one of the biggest cinema industries on the whole world. This country has offered director such like Riddley Scott with his acclaimed boundaries-pushing movie such as Alien and Blade Runner, Christopher Nolan with his mind-boggling and no CGI movies like Inception and Interstellar, and Alfred Hitchcock with the genre defining with Psycho. The UK cinema industry does offeres the best directors of all the whole cinema scope, but also the best actors and film companies; That are mostly independent and small companies. According to the BFI industry companies “In the UK, most film industry companies are in the production and post-production sectors, but most of these are small companies. The exhibition sector has the greatest proportion of large companies, the top 10 of which generated 92% of the sector’s total turnover in 2015”; Meaning the 47% since 2010, that’s when companies that were industry started growing, there was a bigger demand for movies that are made in Great-Britain soil, like the increase of more content.

The UK cinema industry also offers a Film tax relief, which is a type of tax credit set up by the government to boost the UK creative industry. It’s design ed to help film production companies reduce the amount of tax they must pay or to claim a payable tax credit, even if you have 100% UK-qualifying spending, tax relief is only available on up to 80% of the core expenditure, according to the tax relief cap of 80%. To be able to apply to a tax relief, you must apply a DCMS British Film certificate (interim/final) which you will receive via the British Film Institute’s (BFI) Certification Department because of qualifying as a British film.

They also offer a beautiful and extensive range of location like in the snow and misty places in Wales; The green and close to nature locations in Northen Ireland; The more dystopian places and weird environments of Scotland, and the modern and urban cities of England especially in London where you go the Shard.

Ealing Studios

Ealing studios is one of the oldest working studio facilities for film production in the world. The place was first occupied in 1902 by Will Baker Studios by Will Baker a film producer who upscaled filmmaking in Britain with where low-budget films to high quality well-produced epics that match Hollywood’s style of film making. But from 1929 it was bought by a theatre producer Basil Dean, was founded Associated Talking Pictures Ltd. Around the 1930’s they built Ealing studios, swapping all production there in December of 1931, and Basil Dean was later replaced by Michael Balcon from the well-known studio of the time Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Later more than 60 had been made on that studio, ushering in the golden age of the studio.

Since the start Ealing Studio was making remarkable comedy films thanks to Michael Balcon, that invested high production. Ealing Studio was very important during it’s time because it helped employ a lot of documentary filmmakers to create more realistic war films, because on the time of the creation of the studio was around the two world wars.

The studio was bought by BBC in 1955 post-war time, and Michael Bacon left the studio, at their prime, 56 film crew used the studio base of location filming of dramas, documentaries, etc. By the 60s, 70s, 80s they made countless comedy classics and sci-fi, and they include Come Home, Z-Cars, Colditz, Porridge, Monty Python, The Singing Detective and Dr. Who. In Today’s time, now has been bought by the independent production company Fragile Films, investing more than £20 millions. They made a comeback with classic comedies such as Shaun of the Dead, Notting Hill and The Importance of Being Earnest.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene in simple word is the positioning of the stage's equipment and scenery in a play, what is put on the set like the colour, lighting, props, costumes, space and the way that the actor is place. Mise-en-scene is whatever that is appearing on the scene or shot. Mise-en-scene is essential for movies that are being told by the visuals, where every wall patterns change the plot. The practice of Mise-en-scene has been used in theatre since at least the late 1700s when French novelist Denis Diderot wrote about it in his novel Jacques le Fataliste., Mise-en-scene in French means "setting the stage” because it’s important that props and the scenery had to show but with a purpose, later with the development of cinema directors started to borrow this technique in early movie, this helped to enhance the cinematography in early films. There are many elements of mise-en-scene:

Composition helps design a shot have an equal distribution of light, colour, and objects and/or figures in a shot; a filmmaker must consciously choose the frame and camera angles that will accentuate his visual expression. This strategy works because people are more likely to notice something out of balance because it could seem strange. Depending on how important a character's part is, the filmmaker may put them differently.

The set helps show the space, place and time period, it can something simple as a bench in Forrest Gump or a big fantasy setting on Lord of The Rings or Harry Potter film series, and a critical set place can drive the plot further and express or reflect the mood of characters emotional state, like the movies Cries and Whispers, the movie is mostly set on big room with 19th century furniture and wall filled with really bright red that is symbolises the struggle of the main character with terminal cancer and this import was well for world building, and etc. Set is often expensive, and it can take of most of the large part of any film budget.

Lighting is key part of a movie shot, this enhances the scene to make it more effective or tell the audience something, and this technique can be seen and unseen. When we are talking about lighting normally people associate that with the striking lighting of the Film Noir genre and is well known for the strong contract in colour or shade with a presence of chiaroscuro lighting which makes like I mentioned use of strong contrast between light and dark and it was primary used in the Renaissance period, and it used by the best painters at the that time like Leonardo Da Vinci, Caravaggio. The use of this technique not exclusively used in Film Noir, and this technique was used in black and white movies like Nosferatu, Metropolis.

mise_en_scene.jpg

Colours in Film

Colour in film is very essential for the presentation of a movie scene, it’s also part of mise-en-scene. It’s important to present colour to a scene, because it can bring a range of emotion, and have meaning behind it. Colour can define the setting of the scene and draw attention to key thing to the scene. It gives the movie its own aesthetic and can help with the story is told, colour can influence the audience emotionally, psychologically and even physically displaying the colours correctly. The colour can be anywhere from the clothes that the characters are wearing, walls or the lights glowing through the scene.

Red

image1_9f44431a-3829-431c-8d16-ee550f57f187.webp

The colour red on a movie can vary because, red can mean passion and love, but on the other side it can mean aggression, violence, and anger. Red can set a lot of tension on a scene and convey a message. Like this shot from 2001, A Space Odyssey where the character deactivates the computers, and the colour red is the representation of the nightmare.

Blue

The colour blue  means faith, spirituality, contentment, loyalty even thought the colour blue is cold colour this also can help give warmth and company and also a colour of isolation. Blue can be a colour of the purity.

moonlight+copy+2.jpg

Yellow

Wes-Anderson-Red-and-Yello.jpg

Yellow is a colour wisdom, knowledge, relaxation, joy, happiness, and it's colour mostly used by Wes Anderson that executes it, and shots shows that the characters is peace and tranquillity. The colour yellow is very bright colour, that when is always presented it always sticks out.

Orange

The orange express a lot of colour such as warmth and caution. and it may express health, strength, dynamism, and vitality but also hot weather, and give an apocalyptic atmosphere to a scene.

Composition and Camera Movement

Band Of Brothers (2001)

6a00e5500c8a2a883301538e1fcc44970b.jpeg

This is from the sixth episode of the TV mini-series Band of Brothers and this scene that looking starts exactly and at 4:37 when an unknown individual is walking a down a really freezing and foggy, but there is more of a focus on the scenery of the freezing cold and big trees, and there is tracking shot following the closer to the character, and then he walking on his own, then finds and a dead body and looks more deeper there is pile of dead soldiers. Then a close-up shows that he is scared because he knowns that he can be the next victim no words coming out of his moth you can see the fright on his face and you can see an armband that has a medical symbol meaning that he only heals people, and he doesn't carry guns. So, he goes looking for assistance while the camera is panning how and he because smaller in the frame. Then there is a shot of guy breaking ice to take out water to shave and is brilliant how the actor expresses what he feels with his facial language by quickly applying the shaving scream to his face because the water was cold.

The soldier hears something and whispers violently “Doc” so that he can duck quickly because maybe there is a threat incoming. When they move to see the potential threat, there is no cuts whatsoever, and the camera just follows slowly the soldiers, and the character with the gun and the doctor were the focus, but then the soldier with the gun points at the target, the camera focuses on the target that you can’t see well because how foggy the scenery. Next the camera focuses on the and the man interrogating the soldier reading his passport. You notice that while the soldier is getting his passport check, you can’t be helped to expect the any of the soldier to kill the potential enemy, and you can see from the doctor’s face that he doesn’t want to see any more killing because he is not like the other soldiers, and he is over there on the battlefield save lives and taking it. But then he is taken by other soldiers, and he is gifted with a block of bandages, which links with the episodes fear of not having enough resources to save other soldier, and with the cold and blue-Ish cinematography it makes the episode more hopeless.

This gets worst because the American soldiers lost a lot of many powers and barely have aid, food, clothes for winter and ammunition for battle, this makes this episode and situation a dead-end move. When the Doctor tries to find more morphine for his stock the base that they were settled is are hit with bombs that makes the camera shaky for the action and the doctor is trying hard escape from the situation because he doesn’t have no guns so his forced to run. Then suddenly are soldier is hit and the doctor demands for his aid kit for his stock of aids.

A Film introduction

20 second short movie

In class where set to make at least a for short 20 seconds film so that we can show it in class. But first I will analyse my favourite short film because of its well paced and composed scene. Before I start the analyse dipper I liked how Havery's short film has a good colour graded shot that helps to give the short more tension. The fact that the short has no sound that make it more anxious and atmospheric. The good variation of angles. My favourite scene was when he was outside and this escalates the short and the way the light is motivated makes it better. That's why it was my favourite.

40 Second short film

Screenshot (1468)_edited.jpg

This is that my short movie called Lumiere meaning light in French. This short movie was recorded on an iPhone and edited in Premiere Pro on a Mac. This movie basically follows a boy that encounter a surreal entity that wants to show him the light. I was heavily inspired by the Tv show Atlanta that has extremely surreal scenes, I even tried to copy the colour grading.

What I like about this short movies the camera movement and composition, which is handheld and also changes perspectives from the entity and the boy. The colour grading it's a reference to David Fincher thriller films, and also matches the outside lighting and the red room scene. This movie could have some improvements but this a good call for the future.

Editing and Filming Technique

Asynchronous Sound

Asynchronous sound is when audio tracks are out of unison with the visual in the frame, For example, an asynchronous sound may come through on a film,  the advanced sound occurs when the editor chooses to show a child that is crying in a crib. But over or instead of the crying. The sound of a loud dog barking from the next scene comes into play. There are many creative ways to use asynchronous sound in movies and can, sound effects, songs and dialogue can be used for thematic benefit of your film, it builds tension with scenes like a of character on scary scenary where he/she is walking a dark hallways. There are many creative ways to use asynchronous sound in filmmaking. Any type of audio that can be synchronous, can also be asynchronous. SFX, music, and dialogue can all be asynchronous and work to the thematic benefit of your film, the important thing is to make sure it is an intentional choice and not a mere sync issue, and that there is a compelling reason behind the decision.

A wipe transition is a final editing method in which one shot is replaced by another by transferring or "wiping" from one end of the frame to the other. Any path and any form can be chosen for the wipe transition. The wipe is frequently used in movies to switch between pictures or locales.

A great technique for showing a skip in time in a film is via a jump cut transition. It can best assist you in telling the story you wish to tell when used properly. Jump cuts are believed to be inherently bad by some filmmakers because they draw attention to how the movie was created and edited. They are viewed as breaking the rules of continuity editing, which aims to give the story a seamless appearance of time and space.

The gradual editing transition from one image to the next is known as a dissolve. Since the beginning of the movie industry, dissolves have been used. One of the greatest film directors of all time, George Méliès, is widely recognised as the inventor of dissolves. And he contributed to their widespread use in what is now known as the "book of film language." There are several crude fades in Méliès' 1899 Cinderella adaptation. Perhaps no film better exemplifies this idea than Citizen Kane, what most people consider Orson Welles’s best movie.

INIATIAL PITCH

A HOPE FOR A NEW TOMORROW

Prologue: Denial

The film first is set on a dark room, where you can barely see the politician faces deciding the fates of the people, government senate and they are deciding is set on world where there is a well-kwon technology where they are unlived  when with a time limit of 24 to 72 hours. This technology is causing mass decline in population, and this technology is called “Troppiemier” and this technology effect third world countries where people are the most hopeless, and there are rumours that they are forced to take part of this operation, which is creating a mass spread genocide. Then he gets out of the facility and goes to a nearby record shop to see if they have more of this music that he was listening to a day earlier, then he encounters this lady her hood asking him, about the CD that he had in hand then they have a small talk about how music does give people hope or light and just the same as the news reporting the amount people that are dying, then Tim being a shy person that he is he awkwardly asks her for a coffee, then she says are going to ask me for coffee before asking for my name, they gasp and starts apologising and then she just says that she was joking and she just introduces herself as Piano. Then Piano jokingly says “let’s hurry up for the coffee I’m starving” then grabs him from the collar.

They losses him and then she asks him why he did do this, but he says has nothing to lose. Then afterwards they walk down they around the streets and Tim asks Piano why she not took her hood off, then she reveals that she is bald, and Tim already knowing her condition says “Oh”, then she says “yep, I found out four months ago, malignant cancer, terminal” she reveals that she has a couple months to live, and at first she felt hopeless and she wanted to be put on the Troppiemier, but she said that’s losing to quickly she wanted to live and taste everything colour drink, watch all movies in the world, and listen to all the music. Then Piano stops and see a paper advertisement to go to an art museum and they decide to head to this museum and Tim says he is a bit hesitant and doesn’t want to go, and she says that Tim doesn’t have nothing to lose, so why not go there. Tim looks at Piano and says that he wants to choose the track and he puts the song Time Limit by Casiopea, and they head off to the museum and get to the museum and it’s all empty and they look at the artifact and painting and them posing like leaders or mocking the poses of the people on the painting. They both lay on the floor looking at the selling and start talking about their dream and Piano starts saying that she wanted to be immortal and that living all eternity, just life being continuous and no end. Then Tim says that, but we all need an end, we are living on the end.

The film need by Tim dying and Piano condition getting worst.

Pre-Production

My pitch wasn't picked but I was in group, and the idea was from my colleague Callum Lynch, his idea is story about a man called Brett that works in a factory, but it slowly causing harm to him, but to be able to leave the job he need to find a repleacement. This was the basic premise of the movie. Our executive producer Derek Andrade. My group was composed of 6 six people a really small crew. From the first day we laid out the idea of the movie and getting ourselves into roles. The executive producer suggested me to be the director which everyone agreed there is a list provided to show the initial roles.

Screenshot (1471)_edited.jpg

Our idea as a group was to share many roles. Where its says all it means anyone can do it but we really need people to do specific task like graphic designing and poster and the soundtrack. This week has the week before half-term. So during half term we cracked on with the pre-production such as foley, storyboarding and script, and risk assessment. The equipment that we are using is the Black Magic Pocket camera, H5 Zoom task cam, Lighting, Shotgun mic.

Production

Now we are in the production phase and while on half-term we found ourselves an actor named Nick that is playing the adult Brett. One of our colleagues Luke is playing young Brett. I play the boss and Damani plays the doctor and Callum the creator plays Felix the replacement. When we got the cast already Callum and Luke where the producers and we got in contacts with the locations and keeping in touch with the main actor. This helped us a lot.

For the first day of filming, we went all the way to Callum's old school to record the seen and I was you can see from the video we are trying figure out the best way to film the scene without the camera being shaky and the next that we are filming we need a steady tripod (gimble) to help us with the task. And also adjusting the lighting. This was recorded on the 8th of April. Harvey was a big help because he co-directed, took over the camera sometimes.

As team we was in a weird position of doing production and post-production. So every new scene we recorded the same day we Harvery (the cinematographer and Editor) and Callum we edit and colour grade. I was later task with making the music and being on sound department, so sorting out the audio and sound effects. So I be using Logic and Audition for the audio. But only started to recorded with the star on the second day when where doing the scene of Brett working on the factory.

Setting Up Factory.jpg

We recorded a covarge for a movie and we did do interasting stuff like the boss scene that is suppose to be a direct reference to Coronel Kurtz on Apocalypse Now when he appears for the first time in scene which is all dark and menacing.

Screenshot (1494).png
Screenshot (1493)_edited.jpg

Every each week we would present the edited version to our tutor to review our movie and recorded this short for almost a week worth of recording that can be see by this one drive link: Footage.

Post-Production

After all the re-shooting we started to with the proper post-production such as the score that I was making on logic and I used the good time soundtrack  which was made by Oneohtrix Point Never to inspire the craft. His music is really snyth based that fit with the movies tension. I used Logic.

Then the editing was made on premiere pro and so of the effect where made in After Effects. The final audio mix was made on Adobe Audition.

Final Outcome

Evaluation

This project was one of biggest achievements on this media course I learnt a lot from basic filmmaking to edit and composition. This a month-long project made 6 dedicated crew members and great actor. This movie is the representation of the visual that we took out of the paper. With this movie we first wanted to make a body horror influenced movie, but we had a lot of roadblocks.

I was first scared when I was set as a director of an idea that wasn’t mine, and I first I didn’t understand it, and once I started to get the idea and flow and understand the movie. Once I understood it, a lot of ideas came to our heads, and we all had a fixed genre and we started to help each other to be set in roles. For the big part of the pre-production, I helped with the storyboard and foley like metal and trying look for music studio to record the foley and trying to help everyone understanding their roles in the crew.

During to production, I started to direct the scene and composing the shots, but one of the biggest mistakes that I committed while recording was, not getting a steady gimble, because for the first scenes it was really shaky, and a lot of the scenes were handheld, and made the production more amateur and next time, I need to get a gimble, because we fixed on post, but at same time that made scene a bit weird. Uses different types of lenses for to different So, to fixed this we started to do more lock scenes on a tripod, like long shot. The editing was awesome because I got to colour grade and trying to set the story on a good pace.

For the lighting was important that we could use the natural light, because it made the production rawer. I also we recorded in 4 : 3 that it is the standard resolution for indie movies. It gave the movie its own aesthetics. But while in production I could’ve recorded more scenes at the start so that re-could scrap the re-shoots. One of the main issues we run through was the rain because it kind slow down the production and potentials hazard like the camera destroying, we fixed It buy using the umbrella to cover it. I loved the aspect of a handheld camera shots that help to make scene more difficult to watch and uncomfortable.

By post-production we literally had to put stuff together, because we edit most of the stuff and colour grade it. I made the score, which was fairly easy, because I know how make music and mixing. I used MIDI keyboards and Logic to make the music, they vary from snyth music to classical musical, that helped to make a range of genre. For the final scene we wanted to use a song called Riot, but we didn’t the rights for, we had to use one of my songs, that made the project 100% ours.

Made the project more authentic. I mixed the song and the audio of the film, I tried to fix the clicks and trying to blend the music with scenes, and add sound effects to add more tension to the film, I layered each song with a low pass equalizer to add more bass, I also mixed the voice over by adding compression and reverb on the sound effect.

Our biggest strength was the cinematography to and choice of editing. Because its choice to record each shot on a different manner and this made the film better. We really did a good job with acting that we kept it simple and not long. Because the doctor’s scene was supposed to be longer, but we shortened it because we wanted to keep it short and with a moderate pace. This made the movie more layered. But in the other side the editing process could’ve been better with more transitions and at times it’s clunky and could’ve been more consistent.

But overall, we are succeeding by listening to each other's ideas and choices, this made the group much stronger, and we barely had disagreement. So overall the production was a success.
